Why should your child read or be read to this summer?

The Facts (from the Waterford Institute):

  • Students can lose as much as 3 months of reading skill without practice and enrichment during the summer months.

  • Teachers typically spend 4-6 weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.

  • Reading 20 minutes a day keeps reading skills progressing through the summer.

  • Reading 6 or more (chapter) books over the summer keeps a child from losing reading skills.

  • In a year, the average American youth spends 900 hours in school and over 1,023 hours watching television.

  • In a school of 400 students (which is the size of Crestview), if each student reads 30 minutes a day over the course of a 75-day vacation (our average summer break), that equals a million minutes of reading!!!
